Blood Transfusion This Evening
My mom and I arrived at the hospital this evening during the 8:00-10:00 p.m. visiting hours at the ICU. My brother had been eagerly awaiting our arrival. We have learned while at the hospital the past two days that he does not always like to ask the nurses for any help, but he doesn't mind asking my mom or I. We are always reminding him that it is their job to help. He wanted some help with his dinner tray, but it was cold when we arrived. So, we got the nurse to re-heat his meal. He had also needed some more water and help with his bedside table. He was complaining that his leg was in some pain. The nurse gave him some pain medicine which made him feel nauseous, and he was unable to eat much of his dinner. A few of his friends stopped by to visit. However, mean nurse Shirley was on duty tonight, and she is strict about the two person at a time in the room rule. His blood platelets have dropped over the past two days, and they were preparing to begin a blood transfusion this evening of two units of blood. Mean nurse Shirley did not make James very happy this evening after missing him four times before finally getting the IV in. He was very panicky, and his heart rate shot up a little. He finally calmed down, but he did not want us to leave tonight at all until he went to sleep. However, mean nurse Shirley would not allow either one of us to stay. She booted us out at 10:00 p.m. on the dot, but we will be back tomorrow for the morning visiting hours from 8:00-11:00 a.m. James along with the rest of our family will be very happy if Shirley is not on duty tomorrow night.
